GIGABAT at Battery 2030+: advancing Europe’s battery innovation agenda

NEWS

From young scientific talent to industrial competitiveness, the event highlighted the need to connect research excellence with Europe’s battery value chain ambitions

Battery 2030+ brought together in Turin, Italy, around 150–200 participants from across the European battery ecosystem, with a strong academic presence alongside representatives from industry, EU institutions and Horizon Europe projects. Among the projects contributing to the discussion was GIGABAT, which showcased its activities and research perspectives during the conference.

The event, organized under the Battery 2030+ Annual Conference framework, featured plenary sessions, poster presentations and exchanges on the future of battery technologies in Europe. While many sessions focused on academic papers and early-stage research projects, the programme also included contributions from BEPA, DG RTD, the European Innovation Council, companies and Horizon Europe initiatives, helping balance the scientific focus with policy and industrial perspectives.

Several themes emerged throughout the conference: strengthening Europe’s competitiveness in the global battery market, accelerating manufacturing efficiency and automation, improving traceability and yield rates, and building a more resilient and integrated European battery value chain. Discussions also highlighted the strategic importance of energy storage, critical raw materials and shared digital infrastructures for data and virtual testing.

A special moment for the GIGABAT community came during the Young Scientists session, where Emanuel Glans from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, partner of the GIGABAT consortium, presented research connected to the project. His presentation received the audience award in the Young Scientists competition, reflecting strong engagement from the conference participants and recognition of the quality of the work presented. “It was a pleasure to get the chance to present one of the works coming out from GIGABAT, and winning the audience pitch award was of course an unexpected bonus” said Emanuel.

The conference also marked a transition point for the broader Battery 2030+ community, as activities will continue under the newly launched BATT-BRIDGE initiative, aimed at further reinforcing collaboration between research and industrial deployment across Europe’s battery ecosystem.
