Powering the future: GIGABAT workshop energizes students at the University of Udine

NEWS

An interactive seminar sheds light on lithium-ion battery technology and Europe’s role in building a sustainable energy supply chain

Recently the University of Udine hosted a dynamic and engaging workshop on lithium-ion batteries, where GIGABAT had a relevant role. The event brought together students from various academic backgrounds who were eager to deepen their understanding of one of today’s most critical technologies in the energy transition.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored the fundamental scientific principles behind how lithium-ion batteries work, gaining insights into the electrochemical processes that power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. The session also covered the most widely used battery chemistries in the current market, offering a clear overview of their respective advantages, limitations, and practical applications. In addition, students were introduced to the complex manufacturing processes required to produce lithium-ion batteries on an industrial scale, helping them appreciate the challenges involved in scaling up production to meet growing global demand.

The workshop concluded with a broader discussion on Europe’s strategic role in advancing battery technologies. Two major EU-funded initiatives were presented as key examples of how the continent is investing in its energy future. GIGABAT, which aims to build a robust and skilled workforce capable of supporting a fully integrated European battery production supply chain, and GIGAGREEN, which is focused on developing new battery chemistries with the potential to significantly enhance energy storage capacity, and the

The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the students throughout the seminar underscored the importance of such educational initiatives. As Europe continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation, workshops like this one play a vital role in preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and industry leaders.
