GIGABAT at SETAC Europe: pioneering sustainability in the battery industry
Insights from GIGABAT work were presented at the fully-booked conference for sustainable battery production
GIGABAT made a strong impact at the 26th SETAC Europe Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Symposium held from October 21st to 23rd, 2024. The fully-booked conference, with over 500 global attendees, gathered leading researchers, professionals, and stakeholders in the environmental field to discuss cutting-edge LCA developments and sustainability challenges.
Representing GIGABAT at the event were Emanuel Bengtsson and Abdur-Rahman Ali from RISE, who contributed to the symposium’s key discussions. The focus of the conference was: “Making LCA Meaningful: Good Data, Better Models, Sustainable Decisions”, and GIGABAT partners presented some developments performed under the project, particularly related to the Framework to evaluate absolute sustainability of battery Gigafactories. Specifically, they delivered a compelling presentation titled “Using Multi-Regional Input-Output Models for Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessments of Industries.” The talk focused on how industries can use these models to measure their absolute environmental impacts, providing a crucial framework for moving towards true sustainability.

In addition to the presentation, a poster was showcased, highlighting the “key challenges in conducting carbon footprint declarations in compliance with the European Union Battery Regulation”. This issue is particularly relevant as industries work to meet stringent EU requirements for environmental transparency and carbon reduction in battery production.
The conference provided GIGABAT with invaluable opportunities to engage in discussions on emerging LCA trends, exchange insights with industry peers, and gather feedback on their work. The event also facilitated the building of new connections and collaborations, reinforcing GIGABAT’s position at the forefront of sustainability in the battery sector.
